Tumblr Never Show Me This Post Again

ETA:

Tumblr's search has always been a bit buggy, and it has not always done *exactly* what it was supposed to do. But it seems like it was updated again in bound of 2017 and can no longer search multiple hashtags with multiple words. If you want to cantankerous search multiple subjects, the best way is to discover the most unique single word possible to represent each subect and search those without the hashtag.

Tumblr unveilved the new "Tumblr Search" 8 months ago, but understanding the fine points of how information technology works or how to benefit from it most isn't always straightforward. (Many of you lot probably know most of this, but hopefully there are at least ane or 2 things that will be useful to everyone.)

Nuts of searching

The Tumblr search bar can either exist found at tumblr.com/search or in the upper right manus corner of your dashboard.

image

When you lot do a search for a subject - for example, Chris Evans (he volition be my lovely assistant today) - tumblr will search the tags of all the posts on tumblr looking for mentions of Chris Evans. Information technology will likewise search text in the body of the postal service (including titles, chat posts, and quotes), yet this is less consistent, and less effective with older posts and longer phrases.

Tumblr will render search results in the post-obit fashion: first it will bear witness you the posts from the past 24 hours in order of popularity (number of notes), so it will list the well-nigh popular posts of all fourth dimension. You tin view your search results as a grid

image

or in "listing view" (traditional dashboard viewing).

image

This is controlled by the buttons on the correct hand side underneath the recommended blogs related to the search subject area.

image

On the left side yous can filter the posts past blazon - for instance, you can look only at text mail results:

image
image

Or you lot tin can view your search results in order of what is nigh recent instead of what is most popular.

Searching mentions vs. searching tags

Tumblr'southward search function is smart, and so a search for Chris Evans volition besides turn up posts tagged/captioned with only "Chris fucking Evans, ladies and gentlemen", which can be very helpful.

BUT if, for case, you're searching "A Dance Of Clowns", a lovely piece of music by Mendelssohn, and your top result is some creepy ass clown like out of a disturbed child's nightmare because that postal service was tagged with "Pennywise the dancing clown", then you lot probably want to search for that specific tag.

This is done 2 ways.

ane) You tin add a hashtag (#) to the beginning of your subject when you type it into the search bar:

image

When at that place is a hashtag, tumblr volition search simply the tags for the exact wording of your search term.

2) Or you can manually change "search" to "tagged" in the address bar. (Do not search using the hashtag if y'all are going to do this.)

A tumblr search will announced in your address bar as tumblr.com/search/discipline:

image

This in the address bar will prove just tagged posts:

image

(plus signs and dashes are interchangeable)

Method #i is more useful because it allows y'all to filter posts by mail type. And considering it allows you to search multiple subjects. (But the /tagged/ method has a few advantages every bit well which I'll explain later.)

Searching multiple subjects

Y'all can easily search for multiple subjects past entering them i after the other in the search bar with a hashtag before each subject. So if, for example, y'all wanted to notice posts that in which Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff were both featured you could do a search like this:

image

And the results would turn upward the way they always practice for a search - the most popular over the by 24 hours first, and then the most pop for all time. And you tin filter them past post blazon or view them by most contempo, etc.

But why end at 2? If you were interested in Steve and Natasha in The Avengers, then yous could search #steve rogers #natasha romanoff #the avengers. Or #chris evans #scarlett johansson #the avengers #behind the scenes. Or #the avengers #doctor who #au. Or #the avengers #steve rogers #reactions. Etc.

How to have reward of Tumblr Search

If y'all're looking exclusively for edits, you can filter past mail service type (photo posts but) or you can practice a multiple subject search using the fandom edit tag - like #steve rogers #marveledit. The latter volition turn upward less results but overall better quality ones. You can also search #mine or #my gifs or #my edits, etc., in combination with a character or transport tag because many people use those tags to designate their original edit posts.

You tin easily browse the near popular posts for very active fandoms past doing a quick search for the fandom name each day. (Or ships, or celebrities, or characters, etc..) I particularly similar to be sure to do a search about 12-20 hours after a new episode has aired in guild to see what the most popular posts most that episode were. (Though remember the well-nigh popular posts are often merely the ones that came first, and sometimes, particularly with edits, ones that come after are generally better and it might be worth scrolling further.)

Blacklisting your notps, anti tags, and things like iheartit and getglue will also brand browsing through tags a more pleasant experience. (I highly recommend xkit. Y'all won't believe how much easier information technology'll make your life.)

One of the advantages of browsing a tag in the /tagged/ format is that yous can cull to enter the tag at a specific date. This can exist useful if you lot oasis't seen the almost recent episode of a show and would like to get dorsum to 1 of that fandom's tags before the episode had aired, if y'all're just curious about what was going on in the tag a long time agone, or if yous plan on going through the entire tag just non all at once, and want to marking your place and then you can render to information technology later. The list of posts in the tag can be cleaved upwardly using a UNIX time stamp which is based on the accented appointment of the post'south publishing on not on its relativity to the nowadays.

In order to visit a specific date in the tag (and yous tin can then scroll backwards in time from there), you can visit this site and enter the date in to the fourth dimension stamp generator. And so yous become to the tag on tumblr and add "?earlier=" and then add the fourth dimension stamp onto the terminate. And so for example, if I wanted to see what people were posting in the Chris Evans tag i twelvemonth ago, I would enter that date into the generator

image

My fourth dimension stamp is 1370131200. So to visit the Chris Evans tag at that date, I desire this in my address bar:

image

Success! (It looks similar they were posting good stuff.)

In gild to find your place in a tag yous are scrolling through all y'all need to do is reblog the concluding post y'all are looking at. You tin draft or queue that reblog, or you can cancel it. When the folio refreshes it will requite you the timecode for your place in the tag. You can then bookmark your place or brand a annotation of the engagement and find information technology over again using the method above.

TUMBLR SEARCH DOES Not DO THIS. If you reblog a postal service when using the search part in a new tab, when the folio refreshes it will take you dorsum to the very beginning. For this reason - unless you're searching regularly past "Most Recent" - y'all basically have just one shot to await at everything, unless yous desire to scroll through it all over again merely to reach the posts you didn't get to before.

Some tips for tagging effectively are under the cut

Tagging effectively to get more than notes

When you tag a new original post, go on in heed that when someone goes through the tracked tags (tumblr.com/tagged/____) your post volition only come up upwards if the tag they are searching is one of your FIRST FIVE TAGS on that post. And so always put the nigh important tags kickoff and go out your commentary and personal tags for your web log for last.

Tags after the outset five will still come upward in mention searches and hashtag searches. For example,  I don't utilise "romanogersedit" every bit one of my first five tags for my Steve/Natasha edits considering no one is going to be tracking that tag, merely I still tag with it because if someone searches for romanogersedit and then all of my Steve/Natasha edits will still show upwards in that search. (Well, some of them. It'due south a little inconsistent.)

Then tags after your offset v are still of import.

Over again, many of yous already know all of this so I hope it doesn't sound similar I'1000 talking down to yous at all and certainly I don't have any say-so just the experience of years squandered on this site.

The well-nigh important tip is to apply your first five tags wisely. Think near what tags people will exist tracking or checking.
–No one is going to bank check the tag 2x13, so using up one of your starting time five tags on the number of the episode is not the best use of that slot.
–If the grapheme has a mutual first name but no known terminal name then don't carp using their name as one of the first five tags, and be sure to tag the actor.
–This bears repeating: if you lot apply certain tags for characters, ships, fandoms,  etc., on your web log that are not the regular tags for tumblr as a whole, salvage those for right before your commentary tags. This includes serial that you're doing (like 50 Hd close-up pics of Chris Evans' pecs – 100cepecs – for example – btw can someone please do that?). Unless you desire your series to work as a tracked tag, which is absurd too.

DO YOUR RESEARCH. If you lot don't know what the ship proper name is, or the edit tag is, or whether to phone call her Queen Ravenna or just Ravenna, and then just spend a few minutes trying to figure information technology out. Try out the tag, scroll downwardly a little, see how frequently posts are being made in that tag, cheque out what those posts are tagged with, and then compare. 90% of the time it'll be pretty articulate which tag is more pop. USE THE More Pop TAG. Even if yous prefer the other transport name or you think information technology should merely exist Flintstone and not Helm Flintstone, please please please but use the more than popular tag because that's better for everyone. If your post is worth making, and then isn't it worth figuring out where information technology should become and where people will exist looking for it?

Use edit tags. If yous've made a graphic, or a gifset, or a picspam, or edited a screencap, and so put it in an edit tag so that people who are only looking for edits can observe information technology more than easily. Near fandoms have them, and very active fandoms as well have them for ships and characters. Typically it's the title of the moving picture or show, no spaces and no manufactures, +edit. Avengersedit. Captainamericaedit. If there'due south a very common abbreviation, than that is typically used. aosedit. gotedit. The same with characters. Sansastarkedit. Steverogersedit. Only sometimes information technology's different. Spncastiel, for case. Which is why it's always practiced to do your research. Popular celebrities likewise have edit tags. Putting your post in an edit tag volition keep it relevant for longer because edit tags aren't as active and are less tedious to go through, which means visitors will scroll for a long time and encounter older stuff.

Contrary to popular belief, you lot *tin can* change your tags after publishing your post, and they will still be searchable. And so if you discover a typo, ready it. If you realize the tag you used isn't the best one to have used, change it. Just continue in heed that you'll have to retype all of the other tags that followed information technology, if you lot desire that tag to exist i your first five.

Bonus tips:

-Make new posts when tumblr is most active (and then not when it's the middle of the night in the Usa. Fri evenings in the US and Saturdays tend to be slower also).

-Check the tags right before yous post or amend yet before you lot beginning editing. If something very similar to what you lot made is going around or has been recently posted by someone else so yous would be better off waiting and posting it in a few weeks or more than. People won't reblog if they've just seen/reblogged the same thing.

-No matter how well you tag there'due south no equivalent for having a lot of followers. But being reblogged by someone (or a field of study-specific weblog) with a lot of followers is nearly as practiced. Find out what tags they runway and when they check them, or if they follow you, mail or reblog your post when they're on their dashboard. Don't be pushy well-nigh it, of class, but there's nothing wrong with arranging for someone who will similar your post to encounter it.

Tips for tagging effectively to not exist a buttface (aka tips for tagging effectively to be a tumblr user who is considerate of others)

Once again, this is simply what I've observed as a longtime tumblr user.

Please don't tag your hate. People who check the tags are people who like the thing. They don't want to come across your detest – even if it'south thoughtful, valid, well-argued criticism – and you're not going to alter their minds. They'll just ignore you (one hopes), or information technology'll become ugly. If you need to tag the thing for the sake of you own blog, then definitely make sure information technology's not one of your first five tags. (Though coming up with a unique tag for your blog is best.) This is particularly of import with existent people, characters, and ships. Tagging the fandom in negative posts is more often than not regarded as totally fine.

Practice not tag the ship  if your mail is just you stating that you don't transport it romantically or explaining why you don't transport it romantically. While you lot might not consider this "hate", people checking the tag do non want to see it. You can discuss the relationship platonically in the grapheme tags or y'all tin develop a new tag for the ideal relationship. But edits are fine.

If you're going to make a negative mail, use an anti tag. Again, do your research to observe out what the anti tag is the for the matter you dislike then much. If one doesn't exist yet, then congrats, you go to be the first mail service. Anti tags allow yous to connect with others who experience the same mode and it allows your followers and people browsing through the tags to blacklist/tumblr savior your post and so they don't take to see it. Some people don't recall anti tags are a good idea then information technology's controversial just in my opinion I do recall information technology'due south better. (In fact I love going through anti tags I will confess that freely.)

Don't tag your post with stuff that'southward not in your mail. If y'all're making a full general statement and than tagging with things information technology applies to, that'south ok. But if you lot edited a screencap of Steve Rogers all past himself and then tagged it with every unmarried character in The Avengers, all of their actors, and and so opened up a dictionary and tagged information technology with every give-and-take yous could find, then you're wrong and don't do that. I know you lot want to get notes but come on, have some award. Tagging a picture of an actor with every role they've played and every pic they've ever been in is more controversial. It'll become yous notes, but in my opinion it shouldn't be done on principal. (If I'm searching a character and then I'm looking for pictures of that character, not the player. If I wanted pictures of the actor, I would have searched for the actor. Simply that'southward just my take.)

DON'T PUT SOMETHING THAT'South NOT AN EDIT IN AN EDIT TAG. That'due south the worst offense in that location is. The whole betoken of the edit tag is to avoid stuff like that.

And finally: think long and hard about what you're about to postal service and what you're about to tag it with, and enquire yourself seriously if anyone checking those tags is going to want to see your post. That sounds harsh, but permit'south exist existent. Your followers intendance, but people going through the tags probably don't. What is your postal service bringing to the tag? Is information technology but something you're making them gyre past? Are you wasting their time? So recollect virtually your starting time five tags and whether your post is worth tagging. Obviously you need to tag it for your own blog's purposes, then y'all tin come upward with a unique tag for your blog, or you tin skip the first five tags by using them up on tags people won't cheque, similar jibberish or commentary, etc.

For case: "I'chiliad going to see The Winter Soldier this night. So excited!" People going through the tags for the Wintertime Soldier don't need to see that post. Peculiarly when it's i of xxx posts just similar information technology. And so don't tag it in a way that'll force people going through the tags to meet it. "Eating a grilled cheese and watching Captain America. Best lunch ever." All that mail service has done is make me crave a grilled cheese. It's certainly not an interesting post virtually Helm America.

So, please don't become insecure about whether what you've said is smart plenty or funny enough (or whether it has been said before because there'due south no reasonable way of knowing), just be mindful when tagging of the fact that everyone going through the tags will exist seeing your mail.

As well be mindful of what is potentially triggering and tag it. There's no expert reason not to be courteous of others.

tags for your blog

Thanks to generous geniuses, at that place are ii very easy methods of irresolute the tags on your web log. Using this app or the same xkit, you can type in a tag y'all would like to alter, and so type in what you want to change it to, and these wonderful technologies will make those changes for yous. You can also suspend a new tag (and so yous tin can add the tag "mcu" to every mail tagged with "helm america", for case) or yous tin erase the tag from every postal service that is tagged with it.

This is  very useful for a million reasons, but especially if you desire to create a new unique tag for your blog for a certain subject (like if I wanted to start tagging Chris Evans on my blog as "precious meatball" I could make sure that all of the posts of him I already had on my blog were tagged that manner as well).

But be careful because there'southward no going back if you accidentally do the wrong thing, and be especially careful of punctuation tags.

ETA:

Tumblr's search has e'er been a bit buggy, and it has non ever done *exactly* what it was supposed to do. But it seems like it was updated once again in spring of 2017 and tin no longer search multiple hashtags with multiple words. If you lot want to cross search multiple subjects, the best mode is to find the most unique unmarried word possible to stand for each subect and search those without the hashtag.
